The ruins of Dinah's house. Used as a house and office for the mining captain at the Golden Dagger tin mine. An enigmatic ruin with a sad history. John Webb was one of the captains, he lost his infant son who drowned in the nearby Redwater brook. John James Coaker, another captain, died in the house after returning home from a hard days labour. The ruin got its name from a Dinah Hext who lived here in the 1860's. I might have a sneaky wild camp here in the winter.. #dinahshouse #ruin #abandoned #dartmoor #hiking #walking #backpacking #wilderness #wildcamping #ukwildcamping

Challacombe deserted medieval village. A beautiful ruin surrounded by Medieval strip lynchets on the slopes. Farmers once lived here with their livestock. Nobody knows why it was abandoned, possibly the Black Death paid a visit ☠💀 #challacombe #medieval #dartmoor #walking #hiking #backpacking #wilderness #wildcamping #ukwildcamping

Camping in the clouds on top of High Willhays on Dartmoor. At 2039ft or 621m above sea level it's the highest point south of the Brecon beacons. Apparently it's the hottest day of the year 🤔 @lostthepath trying to get out of camera shot at the end 😄 #highwillhays #dartmoor #wildcamping #ukwildcamping #wilderness #hiking #backpacking #walking

The Coffin Stone. In centuries past the inhabitants of the moor were usually buried at Lydford St Petroc's Church and Widecombe St Pancras Church. If those carrying the coffins were coming from the Dartmeet area, they'd have to climb the steep hill at Yartor Down towards Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Given the height of the ascent, they'd have to stop for a breather. They placed the coffin on the coffin stone which is how the stone got its name. It was tradition to stop here and have a tot of whisky in remembrance to the departed, many of the pall bearers would incise a cross or initials on the coffin stone. Many of these engravings can be seen today. #coffinstone #dartmoor #hiking #wildcamping #death #dead #coffin #lychway
An interesting but sad find in Princetown. The Three Valiant Soldiers. In1853 Dartmoor was in the grip of a harsh winter, the snow lay thick with drifts several feet deep. At this time Dartmoor prison was used to house convicts who were guarded by a company of the 7th Regiment of Royal Fusiliers. The deep snows had cut off Princetown. On Saturday the 12th of February two privates from the fusiliers at Princetown had been discharged from the Royal Military Hospital at Devonport. Their names were George Driver and Patrick Carlin and they were at their barracks in St. George’s Square awaiting an escort to take them back to Princetown. Later that day a Corporal Ramsden took them the first seven miles of the journey to Roborough where the party was met by Corporal Joseph Penton. He had struggled down the ten miles from Princetown through horrendous conditions to escort the two privates back. Penton was accompanied by another soldier called John Smith who was returning to Devonport so it was a kind of ‘pass the parcel’ detail. When they met the Devonport party both men described how they had encountered snow drifts that came up to their armpits. Smith then attempted to persuade Corporal Penton not to attempt the return journey but to wait until conditions improved. Penton was having none of it and is reported to have said that he would return to Princetown with the two privates because “duty is duty.” So they set off up towards the moor and eventually managed to reach the Dousland Barn Inn where they stopped for a rest. Once they had regained their strength the men decided to complete the journey. That was the last time the soldiers were seen alive. Driver and Carlin's bodies were found frozen near Peek hill. Penton had made it to within 200 yards of safety near the Duchy Hotel, what is now the visitors centre in Princetown. #dartmoor #threevaliantsoldiers. #snow #wilderness
